Meet Gagan Kaur Sangha
Gagan Kaur Sangha is a social justice advocate practicing exclusively family law.
Gagan obtained her B.A. in Political Science with a minor in International Development from Western University. In her third year she completed an exchange program at Royal Holloway, University of London, where she was privileged to experience Nelson Mandela speak at Trafalgar Square, and to travel in Italy, Germany and Spain.
Encouraged by her first mentor, Sohel Singh Sangha, Gagan’s social justice interest was strengthened at Windsor Law with its focus on access to justice. In law school, she organized and protested on issues of anti-black racism and social justice. She is grateful for the mentorship of learned faculty members, particularly, Dr. Emily Carasco, Professor David Tanovich and Dr. Paul D. Ocheje.
For her law school summer, she received a Social Justice Fellowship and a Canadian International Development Agency grant to complete an internship in Ghana, where she and her fellow students started an NGO called Our Children Africa, focused on primary education and teacher training. She was grateful to travel to Kenya, Egypt and Amsterdam on these trips.
Not interested in the traditional articling recruitment process and frustrated with the lack of exposure to social justice jobs, Gagan worked with Dr. Emily Carasco and Lily Tekle to organize the first Justice at Work Conference in 2009 to showcase social justice careers. She is very proud that this Public Interest Career Conference became an annual event, which has been put on for over a decade.
“Are you a social justice lawyer?” is the question that landed her an articling placement in criminal defence in Toronto with principal, Jagmeet Singh – the current leader of the Federal New Democratic Party. Her answer was an enthusiastic, “yes!”.
Gagan was called to the Law Society of Upper Canada and was accepted into the Canadian Bar Association’s Young Lawyers International Program, where she completed an internship in 2011 in refugee law at Lawyers for Human Rights in Durban, South Africa. Gagan was fortunate to travel to Johannesburg, Mozambique and London, U.K. during this experience.
Gagan then moved to Calgary in 2012 and was called to the bar that year in Alberta on her birthday. She also joined Timothy J. Corcoran that year, and they have been working as a dynamic team since then.
Gagan would be happy to speak with you about your family law matter in an effort to help you navigate your post-separation world, and to formulate a plan to meet your priorities. She understands that legal jargon can often be overwhelming. To ensure her clients understand the law, she has developed a unique talent of explaining legalese in plain language, and clearly identifying their options so that they can make informed decisions about their family’s future.
Gagan is an exceptional oral advocate with experience at the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta and the Provincial Court of Alberta. She is trained in Mediation of Family and Divorce Conflicts and her practical family-focused approach will appeal to those who are interested in resolution.
Gagan is committed to pro bono work as a part of her family law practice.
Gagan strongly believes in the power of positive mentorship to powerfully influence the lives of mentees. From her own mentorship at a law office in high school and at the Brampton Crown’s office during her university summers, Gagan chooses to mentor in order to pay forward the mentorship she has received. She participates in the Law Society of Alberta Mentor Express Program and appreciates that she obtains more benefits from the mentee relationship than the obligations that it requires of her. If you are seeking mentorship, contact Gagan to see if she can help.
Gagan is fluent in English and Punjabi, and when she is not practicing law you can find her reading, meditating, practising yoga and travelling. Her latest memorable trips were a family vacation in India and Singapore and travels with her best friends in Ghana and Jamaica. Gagan looks forward to travelling again, for she believes that there is no greater teacher or joy than travel.
As an empath, Gagan does not like conflict, but 12 years of practising family law has confirmed that she is made for resolving disputes
A peaceful and mindful lifestyle is important to Gagan. She finds balance amidst conflict by building her meditation and mindfulness practice.
Gagan currently practises family law in Alberta and is building her mediation practice in Ontario and British Columbia. Contact Gagan at info@corcoran.ca to see if she can assist you with your matter.
